Formal interrelationships

                                                                               Detachment

In this composition, the forms remain fully separate, each holding its own territory without overlap or contact. Their isolation creates a visual stillness, allowing the viewer to focus on the individuality and integrity of each shape. Detachment emphasizes how distance can shape perception, generating tension through empty space rather than physical interaction. The separation highlights difference, independence, and the quiet presence of each form. By refusing connection, the shapes invite the viewer to consider how meaning emerges not only from relationships but also from intentional lack of connection.

Touching

Here, the forms meet gently at a single point or along a delicate edge, creating a subtle but meaningful connection. Touching represents the threshold between independence and unity—it is neither separation nor merging, but a moment of contact filled with potential. This relationship draws attention to balance, sensitivity, and the tension created when two shapes rely on a minimal shared boundary. Touching suggests the beginning of interaction, where each form acknowledges the other without losing its identity. The composition invites reflection on how even the smallest point of contact can transform spatial and emotional relationships.

Overlapping
In this arrangement, one form partially covers another, creating a layered relationship that introduces depth and visual hierarchy. Overlapping blurs boundaries, requiring the viewer to interpret which shape is dominant and how the forms influence each other. The shared area becomes a zone of complexity where identities mix and shift. This interaction adds movement to the composition, as the eye travels between what is visible and what is obscured. Overlapping demonstrates how forms engage in negotiation, shaping each other’s presence and creating unity through layered interaction rather than separation or full merging.

Penetration

Penetration occurs when one form enters another’s space, creating a bold and dynamic interaction. Unlike simple overlapping, penetration generates a shared interior region that fundamentally alters both shapes. This relationship feels assertive, revealing tension, force, and transformation. The composition emphasizes how boundaries can be challenged and redefined when one form actively breaks through another. The resulting shared zone becomes a hybrid space, symbolizing exchange and integration. Penetration invites the viewer to consider how strong interactions reshape identities, demonstrating that form is not fixed but responsive to forces that push into and alter its structure.

Union

Union describes the moment when two shapes join together to form a single, cohesive whole. Their edges connect smoothly, and their masses integrate to create a new combined structure. This relationship expresses stability, cooperation, and harmony. Union emphasizes how separate elements can lose their individual boundaries in favor of building a stronger, unified presence. The composition suggests completeness, showing that forms gain new meaning and purpose when they come together. This interaction invites reflection on how unity transforms both structure and interpretation, merging differences into a balanced, coherent shape that feels intentional and whole.

Subtraction

In this composition, form is defined by what has been removed rather than what remains. A deliberate portion is cut away, turning negative space into a powerful visual element. Subtraction highlights how absence can shape structure, giving clarity and emphasis to the remaining edges. The empty space becomes active, directing attention and creating new relationships between shapes. This approach demonstrates that form is not only built by addition but also refined through removal. Subtraction encourages the viewer to appreciate reduction, showing how eliminating material can reveal essential qualities and create
stronger, more focused composition.

Intersection

Intersection occurs when two shapes cross through one another, forming a distinct shared region with its own geometry. Neither form dominates; instead, their meeting creates new internal lines, angles, and relationships. The composition emphasizes analytical thinking, revealing how structures combine to produce new identities while still maintaining their individual presence. Intersection symbolizes interaction, cooperation, and structural complexity. It invites the viewer to consider how overlapping systems can coexist and generate unexpected results. Through this relationship, the forms reveal their interconnectedness, demonstrating that new meaning often emerges from points where paths cross.

Coinciding

In coinciding, two forms align perfectly, occupying the same outline or position so precisely that their boundaries become indistinguishable. This relationship represents the highest degree of unity, where difference dissolves entirely. The viewer is left questioning where one form ends and the other begins. Coinciding suggests harmony, sameness, and complete overlay, creating an image of total integration. Yet it also raises subtle tension: when individuality disappears, does the form gain strength or lose identity? The composition invites reflection on unity, equivalence, and the quiet power of forms that become one through perfect alignment.

  1. 🇺🇸/🇬🇧 I love the Subtraction art because the three squares from the Penetration art just looks different because the lines and the new shapes were removed in this art.

    1. 🇨🇳 我喜欢“减法艺术”,因为与“穿透艺术”相比,这幅作品中的三个正方形看起来截然不同,因为这幅作品中移除了线条和新的形状。

  2. I really like all of your designs and i think you did amazing. All of them are so neatly drawn and portray all the requirements. I like how each one is different in a way and how theres no smudges or anything in the background. My favorite one has to be intersection. It looks cool and i can tell where intersection is show right away. I like the idea because when i was researching these, i didn't find anything like it so i like its uniqueness. Out of all of them though, i feel like detachment mighrt need some improvement. Although i do like the idea, i feel like a shape should be colored in or the background should be to show that their all disconnected from eachother better. But i love all of them.
