Figure Ground Cutouts
Figure Ground Cutouts
This artwork employs a striking figure-ground relationship, using the contrast between yellow figures and a green background to create visual depth. The yellow portion, acting as the "figure," is multifaceted, resembling an abstract face or biological image, drawing the viewer's attention.
The green background, serving as the "background," accentuates and defines the boundaries of the figures, making the yellow portion stand out even more. Both are interdependent and indispensable. Simultaneously, at certain edges, a visual interchangeability effect occurs between figure and ground.
For example, the jagged and curved sections on the right can be seen as part of the figure or as an extension of the background, creating a visual experience of alternating "positive and negative space." This design embodies the core principle of the figure-ground relationship—figure and ground are not fixed but constantly transforming in the viewer's visual perception. Through simple color and shape contrasts, the artwork showcases a sense of space and visual balance, allowing viewers to more intuitively understand the crucial role of the figure-ground relationship in artistic composition.
